.UNILORIN introduces self-denfence, combat training

Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB),  Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju, Oloyede, has advanced reasons for honouring his teaching appointment with the University of Ilorin, despite his current status as scribe of the tertiary examinations board.

Oloyede, an alumnus and ex-vice chancellor of the institution, said a temporary appointment outside the ivory tower should not be a hindrance for any lecturer, discharging his duties to his students.

Besides, he described teaching as his first love, noting that his students should not be deprived of his wealth of experience, even while serving the nation in any other capacity.

Speaking on University of Ilorin, Oloyede said that the institution would continue to be outstanding in all spheres of life due to quality of its leadership and personnel, just as he charged public servants to always do the right thing at the right time.
He spoke yesterday after a testimonial teaching of a course to 100 Level students of the institution from the Department of Religions, Faculty of Arts.

The JAMB Registrar, who is also a Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence noted that, “doing the right thing at the right time by every Nigerian, especially those occupying public offices” would continually uplift the fortunes of the country and its people.

Oloyede, who doubles as Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), added that, “if everyone cleans his or her corner, everywhere would be clean.”

In a related development, the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, has taken a proactive step towards equipping its students with essential skills by introducing self-defence and combat training as a vocational activity for them.

This was disclosed by a visiting scholar in the department, Dr Adedeji Saheed Oyenuga, yesterday while speaking at the maiden edition of the training at the Indoor Sports Hall of the university stadium in Ilorin.

Oyenuga, who is an Associate Professor at the Lagos State University, (LASU), Ojo, said although the training could not be immediately integrated into the curriculum due to late proposal, the university had recognised the importance of the initiative and decided to offer it as a vocational activity before incorporating it into the curriculum at a later date.
