Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition) is the latest board game from Disney Lorcana makers Ravensburger to star popular characters from Disney and Pixar movies. With its RPG-inspired elements and a batch of playable heroines, the game presents a fun adventure that changes depending on the selected difficulty and how many people are participating. It's also a co-op experience, which means adventurers will either win or lose together.

The premise behind Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition) is fairly straightforward. A Vortex appears, sending Disney villains into the Realm, and players must band together to defeat their shadow essences. Players must complete Quests as a team, and once those requirements are fulfilled, they win the game. Along the way, there are enemies to fight, collectibles to gather, and plenty of strategizing needed.

What's Included In Chronicles Of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition)

Playable Disney Characters, Cards, & Tokens

The box includes everything needed to play Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition), a game that's meant for up to four players but has rules to allow for fewer - including the ability to play the game solo. There are four playable characters to choose from: Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Maid Marian from Robin Hood, Moana, and Violet from The Incredibles. Each character comes with their own unique abilities, quests, and items to help in exploration or combat.

There are also cards that explain what each Hero can do, and what each ability does - so there's no need to have to memorize everything. Here's what's included in the box:

  • 4 Hero figures of Moana, Violet, Maid Marian, and Belle
  • 4 Hero Health tokens
  • 20 Action tokens
  • 1 Leader Badge
  • 1 Vortex Token
  • 10 Darkness cards
  • 42 Quest tokens
  • 1 Shadow token bag
  • 1 Action board
  • 1 Team Health token
  • 10 Realm of Light tiles
  • 4 Hero cards
  • 16 Quest cards
  • 4 player boards

This may sound like a lot, but not all the pieces will be needed in a single playthrough. Due to the customizability of the game, Quests will change from adventure to adventure, and that means the pieces needed to play will change too. Perhaps most importantly, the included rulebook also does an excellent job of explaining these changes, and the rules are broken up into easy-to-digest segments.

Difficulty Levels & Rules Give Disney's Chronicles Of Light Flexability

A Game Perfect For Adults & Families

There are various difficulty levels in Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition). Similar to what Ravensburger did with Disney Lorcana's Deep Trouble, these difficulty changes can make a game more beginner-friendly or add additional challenges. The rulebook has recommendations for the Quests that are best for newcomers, and players wanting an extra challenge can remove a Darkness card from their deck ahead of the game. There are also more adjustments that teams can use if they want to start off with an easier adventure.

This makes the game highly accessible. For this review, I played the game with a group of adults and used a higher difficulty setting. Mostly, I played it with my three children, all of whom had a lot of fun - we initially played with all the recommended "Beginner" settings but eventually started trying out the more difficult Quests. I also tried the game solo, in which the single player controls two heroes. This worked well, and it's a great feature to have, but Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition) is still more fun with a group.

Final Thoughts On Chronicles Of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition)

A Great Game For Disney Fans

Overall, I've really enjoyed my time with Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition). While the variety of game pieces may seem overwhelming at first, the rules are pretty straightforward and easy to learn. As a family game, it's a lot of fun and although the box says it's for ages 8 and up, my slightly younger children still had a blast - and the adults had an excellent time, too. Each playable character also feels unique while working well together as a group.

The game itself encourages teamwork, and as a co-op board game with RPG elements, it really succeeds. Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition) has a lot of replayability, and the variety of Quests will surely entice players to come back again for more adventures. Much like the Disney and Pixar movies it showcases, Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls (Disney Edition) is a lot of fun for all ages.
