Recent Tottenham transfer links could help the club get the best out of captain Son Heung-min in the new season.

The sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer saw the South Korean take on the captain’s armband as well as a different role in the team. Having not bought a replacement for Kane, Son has been one of the players who has stepped up as the main striker in front of the forward three in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Richarlison the other to take the role.

Son has scored 16 goals so far this season but has flourished more in a wider position in previous campaigns. In 2021/22, he scored 23 times when mainly starting on the left, with Kane taking the main striker role.

Spurs’ summer transfer activity could indicate where on the pitch they intend to play Son next season. The club have been credited with an interest in Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, with the 23-year-old in attendance for the club’s North London Derby defeat against Arsenal on Sunday.

So far this season he has scored 23 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions, and will have a chance to improve those numbers further in the club’s final three games of the season. The striker shared pictures of his time in London and at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on his Instagram stories.

The arrival of Timo Werner in the January transfer window gave Ange Postecoglou more options in the attacking third. In the last few weeks, Richarlison has dropped to the bench, after missing some games through injury, with Werner taking the wide left role and Son playing up front.

Bringing in a new striker in the summer window would only strengthen those options. Having an out-and-out natural centre-forward will see Son move into the wide position where he can be more effective.

It will then leave Richarlison as back-up for either position. It will also lead to a decision having to be made over a potential permanent deal for Werner, Spurs have a £15.5 million option included in the load deal from Red Bull Leipzig signed in January, with Postcoglou saying back in April that a decision will be made at the right time .

"In terms of his future, like most players, the decisions will be made at the appropriate time," he said. "I think he's been a great signing. He's been a really important part of our structure and I think he can also improve."
