Recent clashes along the Nasarawa-Benue border have resulted in fatalities and injuries, exacerbating tensions between indigenous Alago farmers and migrant Tiv farmers from Benue and Taraba states. Mohammed Oshafu, the group’s President, voiced concerns over alleged attempts by the Tiv farmers to forcibly seize ancestral lands, leading to daily confrontations and humiliations for the Alago community.

Oshafu highlighted incidents where Alago farmers were intimidated, molested, and even unlawfully detained in neighboring Benue State. Efforts by local authorities and traditional leaders to mediate peace have been met with continued provocations from the Tiv farmers, aggravating the situation.

Describing a recent deadly attack on three young Alago men engaged in agriculture, Oshafu condemned the violence as not only a direct assault on the Alago people but also a threat to the region’s stability and food security.

The group appealed to the Nasarawa State Government to intensify efforts in resolving the conflict and ensuring the safety of its citizens in Keana LGA. Oshafu emphasized that despite the ongoing provocations, the Alago community remains committed to peace.

In response, Simeon Apusu, President of the Tiv Development Association in Nasarawa, refuted allegations of aggression by Tiv farmers, advocating for dialogue and boundary demarcation between Nasarawa and Benue states to prevent future disputes.

Governor Abdullahi Sule, represented by Commissioner Margaret Otaki Elayo, expressed concern and pledged a thorough investigation into the crisis while reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state’s local government areas.
