The 6th annual Health, Environment, Safety, and Security (HESS) Awards, held on June 28, 2024, celebrated organizations at the forefront of health, environment, safety, and security initiatives.

Themed ‘Thriving in a Changing World: Embracing Resilience and Agility in HESS’, the event honoured Anglogold Ashanti and Trust Hospital as standout leaders.

AngloGold Ashanti garnered significant acclaim, receiving eight awards, including Best Company in Environmental Management Practices, for its sustainable mining efforts. The mining giant also secured accolades for HESS Compliance, Reporting, and Monitoring, On-Site Safety Awareness and Communication in Mining, and HESS Innovation Excellence.

Trust Hospital excelled in healthcare delivery and safety, winning Best Company in Employee Health and Wellbeing Initiatives and the prestigious Patient Safety & Security Excellence awards. Dr. Juliana Ameh, Trust Hospital’s CEO, was recognized as HESS CEO of the Year for her leadership in promoting health and safety.

Other notable winners, including Fidelity Bank Ghana Ltd., GB Foods Ghana Ltd., Interplast Ltd., and Wilmar Africa Ltd., each recognized for their outstanding contributions across various categories, have set a new benchmark for safety management, sustainability, and innovation.

Zhara Abdulai, representing the Awarding Board Chairperson Professor Douglass Boateng, emphasized the awards’ role in highlighting excellence and inspiring continuous improvement in HESS practices. She underscored the importance of these efforts in fostering safer, healthier, and more sustainable environments across industries.

Cephas Adjei Mensah from the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support for promoting best practices in HESS, a crucial step for sustainable development in Ghana.

The event concluded with reflections on the necessity of resilience and innovation in navigating today’s challenges, echoing sentiments shared by Martin Afram of the National Roads and Safety Authority.
