Holyoke, MA - As summer vacation begins, Holyoke Public Schools are taking action to ensure that no child goes hungry with the launch of their 'Summer Eats' program. Healthy Meals for All The 'Summer Eats' program, an initiative aligned with the Massachusetts Summer Food Service Program, offers free lunches to children in need. Sodexo general manager Toni Tirozzi expressed hope for a turnout of around 300 children, emphasizing the importance of providing assistance to those facing food insecurity. Nutritious Options Offering a variety of options such as hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon, and other nutritious sides, the program aims to promote healthy eating habits among students. Access for All With nine locations throughout the city, children under 18 can enjoy a free lunch from 11:30 AM to 1 PM, Monday through Friday. The program not only provides meals but also encourages the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and milk for strong bones. Changing Perceptions Chef Chris Bland highlighted the importance of offering healthy food that is affordable and easily accessible, dispelling the notion that nutritious meals are expensive or time-consuming. Addressing Food Insecurity With a significant portion of the student body relying on state assistance, 'Summer Eats' plays a vital role in addressing food insecurity in the community. Spreading Awareness As food insecurity remains a pressing issue, the program urges the community to spread the word and ensure that no child goes hungry during the summer break.
