While the majority of Americans have a pharmacy within a five-mile radius, those living in rural areas may soon find themselves with limited options due to the closure of essential healthcare providers like Rite Aid.
Concerns for Medication Access
Experts express concern that the closures could jeopardize medication and overall healthcare access for residents. Eric Roath, director of government affairs for the Michigan Pharmacists Association, highlighted the impact on patient-pharmacist relationships, emphasizing that care disruptions and transportation challenges to the nearest pharmacy could create significant inconvenience for patients.
Remote Pharmacy Program
Michigan policymakers have taken steps to address the issue by introducing a remote pharmacy program in 2020. These pharmacies, staffed by pharmacy technicians, aim to fill the gap in areas lacking a pharmacy within a 10-mile radius. Rep. Curt VanderWall, R-Ludington, advocates for the program, stating that it allows patients to continue receiving in-person medication pickups and counseling despite the closures.
Expanded Access to Healthcare
Beyond medication access, pharmacies serve as a source of care and support for patients with complex medical conditions. Roath emphasized that patients rely on pharmacists for advice and care guidance in the healthcare system, losing a valuable healthcare provider when pharmacies close. While remote pharmacies may not offer the same retail experience, they enable patients to consult with pharmacists virtually.

VanderWall acknowledges that remote pharmacies have limitations such as reduced hours and a lack of retail services. However, he believes that they play a crucial role in maintaining medication access for all Michigan residents, especially those in rural communities.
