Blueprint 1 day ago

The family of Toheeb Eniafe, allegedly killed by a policeman at the NNPC Filling Station Obalende Lagos has raised the alarm over alleged cover-up of the suspect(s) by the police authority.

The family made the allegation over the weekend in Lagos while briefing newsmen on the update of investigation into the case.

Our correspondent reports that Toheeb Eniafe was allegedly shot dead at the NNPC Filling Station, Obalende on May 1, 2024 by a policeman while trying to buy fuel.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on May 2, said they had identified the police officer who allegedly shot Toheeb Eniafe at a petrol station on Wednesday.

He said, “The person behind the shooting has been identified as a police officer serving at Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 17, Lion Building, Lagos.

“Investigation is still ongoing and further findings will be made available.

The elder brother of the deceased, who spoke on behalf of the family, Mr Muritala Eniafe, said the police promised them justice, but with the pace of investigation, nothing suggests that police were still on the case.

Eniafe said that in view of the delay in investigation, a petition was written to the IGP over the case, stressing that he was invited to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti Yaba, to assure him again that the police were still investigating the case.

Three other siblings from the Eniafe family present – Noheem, Sulaiman and Folashade – lent their voices in calling on the IGP to bring the killers of their brother to justice as soon as possible.

The branch chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers, Obalende, Mr Wale Giwa, said the deceased was the auditor of the union before his death, stressing that he was there when the deceased was shot.

Giwa said the union was behind the family demanding for the prosecution of all the police men involved in the crises that led to the death of Toheeb.

In his reaction to allegation of covering up the suspects, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, said there was no truth in the allegation.

Fayoade said that the State CID, Panti was handling the case, stressing that all those involved would be prosecuted.

“The Homicide Department of the State CID is investigating the case. The police cannot cover up the suspects.

“Everyone involved in the shooting will be brought to book,” the commissioner assured.
