The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has reported that over 71,459 Nigerians obtained Canadian citizenship between 2005 and 2024, placing Nigeria in the 10th position among countries of birth for new Canadian citizens.

IRCC, a government department responsible for immigration, refugees, and Canadian citizenship matters, released data showing that the top 10 countries of birth for new Canadian citizens collectively represent nearly half of all new citizens. India leads the list with 536,279 citizens, followed by the Philippines with 395,694, and China with 292,325.

According to political sociologist Irene Bloemraad, high levels of citizenship are beneficial as they correlate with improved economic outcomes and a stronger sense of belonging. She highlighted Canada’s standout status among immigrant-receiving countries for its high citizenship rates.

Al Parsai, an immigration consultant based in Toronto, emphasized that the data underscores Canada’s commitment to multiculturalism and diversity. He noted the significant contributions of countries like India and the Philippines to Canada’s labor market and society, as well as Canada’s role in providing refuge to individuals from conflict zones like Syria and Ukraine.

In November 2023, Canada announced a new immigration plan aiming to admit 485,000 new immigrants, with plans to increase to 500,000 annually in 2025 and 2026. The plan targets economic, family, refugee, and humanitarian classes, reflecting Canada’s inclusive immigration policies.

This data underscores Canada’s global appeal and its role as a welcoming destination for immigrants seeking economic opportunities and a better quality of life.
