Shopping for engagement rings isn’t just about finding something you love right now — it’s about finding a style you’ll want to wear for years and years to come. And, while some might opt for more timeless and traditional styles (we see you and love you, solitaire settings), the 2024 engagement ring trends make it easy to embrace some more modern and timely designs, as most are about embracing personal style. The goal of this guide isn’t to present you with ring styles that come and go, but rather styles that are big this year — and beyond.

What a Jewelry Expert Says About 2024 Engagement Ring Trends

“Instead of getting caught up in a specific trend, I suggest taking cues from your (or your partner’s) style to inform what piece you’ll want to wear every day for the rest of your life,” says Jillian Sassone, the founder of Marrow Fine. She recommends asking yourself how you’ll feel about the ring in 10, 20, and even 30 years from now and considering if the design feels like an extension of yourself and your personal style.

If you do find yourself leaning toward one of these popular 2024 engagement ring trends, Sassone says there are a few things worth considering to ensure a more timeless appeal before pulling out your credit card. “Focus on the quality of the gemstone over the size or any elaborate design,” she notes. “A high-quality stone will maintain its value and beauty, regardless of changing trends.”

From classic designs to unique details, here are the most popular 2024 engagement ring trends, plus some of our favorite styles to shop.

  • Unique Shaped Center Stones

According to Sassone, oval and round-shaped diamonds continue to reign at the most popular diamond shapes. However, there are a few subtle shifts this year. “We’re seeing an increased demand for more unique-shaped center diamonds, specifically marquise cuts,” she explains. These diamond shapes are historically linked to royalty and have elongated, pointy ends, which Sassone says can actually create the illusion of a larger stone. “Unlike round diamonds, marquise diamonds each have their own personality when it comes to proportions and length-to-width ratio,” she notes. “Plus, they’re incredibly versatile — a marquise diamond can be set north-south or east-west and looks amazing in botch prong and bezel setting.”

  • Antique Diamonds

Sassone says more and more of her clients are asking for old cuts, aka antique diamonds. “This is the perfect choice for those who don’t want a lab-grown diamond but want to avoid new mining,” she explains. Antique or vintage engagement rings tend to have more unique and intricate settings with a lot of soul, too. “I think there’s something really special about an antique diamond — the fact that each one was cut by hand years and years ago to maximize its glow in candlelight feels romantic,” Sassone adds, noting. Another reason antique diamonds are so special? No two are the same, which is something modern machinery can’t offer.

If you love the look of antique diamonds, some brands carry vintage engagement rings and estate jewelry. However, for something more personal, consider reworking a piece of heirloom jewelry for something old and new.

  • White Gold

With the return of silver jewelry also comes the return of white gold engagement rings. “While yellow gold is by far our most popular setting color, we’re seeing more clients opting for white gold and platinum settings this year,” says Sassone. “It’s a timeless look and can accentuate the diamond,” she adds. If you can’t make up your mind on what you like more, consider opting for a two-tone style, which often includes a yellow gold band with a white gold head (like this baguette engagement ring from Marrow Fine).

  • Colored Gemstones

You don’t have to opt for a white diamond engagement ring. In fact, color stones are actually on trend right now and are an excellent way to add some personal style to your setting. “As timeless as white diamonds are, alternative stones like sapphires, emeralds, and black onyx are trending in 2024,” says Sassone. She says clients are leaning into the non-traditional look because these types of stones are eye-catching yet timeless and, oftentimes, they’re more affordable, too.

  • Toi et Mois Settings

Perhaps one of the most popular 2024 engagement ring trends is the toi et mois (French for “you and me”) setting. This classic French design features not one but two center stones, intertwined together. “If going the custom route, two stones offer the chance to really experiment — the combination of stones, shapes, colors, and settings are endless,” Sassone notes. For an added sentimental touch, she recommends combining an heirloom stone with a newer stone (something old and new!), stones from both families, or birthstones for a pop of color. “The end result is a ring that not only feels unique but can represent you and your partner in a number of ways.”
