Fire crews at the scene

Teams of firefighters from Greater Manchester were scrambled to Cheshire in the early hours of Sunday to tackle a massive blaze at an industrial estate.

Eight fire engines from stations based in Greater Manchester were sent to the scene in the initial response, together with crews from Cheshire and specialist units. Images from the scene capture huge plumes of smoke visible for miles around rising up into the sky.

Local residents in the Poynton area are being told to keep all their windows and doors closed on Sunday morning as a result.

In a 7am update, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said five fire engines remained at the scene, with engineers on site working to isolate the electricity and gas supply.

The blaze broke out at around 2.30am at an industrial building at Adlington Industrial Estate on London Road in Adlington, between Prestbury and Poynton. The fire is also said to have spread to consume a number of HGVs at the site.

There's been no mention by the fire service of any injuries.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "One fire engine from Wilmslow, one fire engine from Crewe, one fire engine and one aerial ladder platform from Lymm, the Scorpion High Reach Extending Turret (HRET) from Macclesfield, plus eight fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were involved in the initial response.

"Cheshire Police and North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance.

"Firefighters are currently dealing with a large fire on Adlington Industrial Estate. 12 fire engines and three special appliances from Cheshire and Greater Manchester are currently in attendance.

"The incident involves a commercial building and a number of lorries. Crews have split the fire into sectors to enable firefighters to deal with the incident and surround the fire to prevent it from spreading further."

"The smoke plume has significantly reduced but firefighters are advising local residents in the Poynton area to keep windows and doors closed at this time." No further details have been revealed.
