All American: Homecoming is a spinoff of The CW’s successful football drama All American, which is currently airing its sixth season. Rather than following football player Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), Homecoming focuses on Simone Hicks (Geffri Maya), a character who was introduced in All American Season 2.
Simone attends Bringston University, a historically black college in Atlanta, Georgia, and decides to pursue her dreams of being a pro tennis player. While she’s there, she must navigate “the highs, lows, and sexiness of unsupervised early adulthood at the prestigious HBCU,” according to the show’s synopsis. The cast also features Cory Dardrict, Sylvester Powell, Martin Bobb-Semple, Camille Hyde, Mitchell Edwards, Netta Walker, and more.
Unfortunately, just weeks before the third season returned to The CW, the network announced that All: Homecoming would end after Season 3. The show’s creator, Nkechi Okoro Carroll, said she was “devastated” to learn that the series was axed.
“I’m devastated to learn that All American: Homecoming will not be moving forward with more episodes and that this new season premiering in July will be our final one. However, I am so very grateful to have worked with this incredible cast and crew, led by Geffri Maya, to bring the authentic HBCU experience to your screens for the last three seasons,” she said in a statement.
The cancelation news comes after the series’ license fee was cut significantly last year to $500,000-$750,000 an episode, according to Deadline. Additionally, sources told the site that Netflix’s deal with the show’s producer Warner Bros. TV only included seasons one through three, and would not extend to a potential fourth season. Deadline also reported that CW is aiming to expand its appeal beyond young adult dramas.
