Police are continuing to investigate after a man died when the car he was driving crashed following a police pursuit.

Declan Connell, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Vauxhall Corsa he was driving careered off the southbound M9 near Stirling on Sunday.

Witnesses who saw the white Corsa before the fatal crash claimed it was travelling at speed while being followed by a police car.

Police confirmed that prior to the collision, the car had been involved in a pursuit.

Dramatic pictures showed it on an embankment with a shattered windscreen after the devastating crash between junctions eight and nine.

Yesterday police named Mr Connell, from Falkirk, as the man who died as they issued a renewed appeal for witnesses.

His two passengers, men aged 19 and 20, were taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital to be checked over by medics but were not seriously hurt.

The incident has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.

A number of locals posted on social media that they had seen the car being driven through nearby Bannockburn on Sunday morning at ‘some speed’.

One wrote: ‘Scary stuff and a devastating end.’

The M9 was closed for accident investigation work after the crash at 11.50am on Sunday and did not fully reopen until 2.40pm yesterday (Mon).

Chief Inspector Mark Patterson said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died and extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

‘We are appealing for any witnesses, particularly motorists with dashcam footage, to please get in touch.

‘Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1377 of Sunday, 7 July, 2024.’
