Manchester United could keep Sofyan Amrabat but are yet to make a final decision on the midfielder's future.

Amrabat's season-long loan has ended but he is still listed on the first team players section on the United website, which has been updated after Brandon Williams, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial were released.

United signed Amrabat on loan from Fiorentina on transfer deadline day in September for €10million with an option to buy for €20m plus €5m in add-ons.

The 27-year-old only started 17 games and went five months without a Premier League start until he was recalled for the home defeat to Arsenal on the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season.

Amrabat performed creditably and he went on to start against Newcastle, Brighton and Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley, where he was outstanding.

The imminent arrival of Dan Ashworth from Newcastle as sporting director is expected to precede a contract extension for Ten Hag, who wants to retain as much control as possible over recruitment.

Ten Hag worked with Amrabat at FC Utrecht in 2017 and pushed for United to close a deal for the Morocco international, despite reservations from members of the hierarchy.

Former football director John Murtough was uncertain of moving for a player whose stock had risen exponentially on the back of his form at the 2022 World Cup.

Matt Hargreaves, the director of football negotiations, flew to Florence on deadline day to finalise the signing of Amrabat.
