Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Govern­ment of the Federation, on Tuesday, explained how the leakage of official secrets by civil servants hinders the im­plementation of government policies.

Akume spoke at a training workshop for communication managers of government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

At the workshop organ­ised by the Bureau of Pub­lic Service Reforms (BPSR), the SGF, represented by Dr. Maurice Nmadi Mbaeri, a Permanent Secretary, said: “The spread of fake news and disinformation through social and digital platforms is a worrying trend. Instead of using digital tools to inform and elevate civic discussion, some individuals are misus­ing these platforms to mis­lead and harm others.”

The SGF warned that the spread of fake news affects society’s peace, harmony and integration.
