4. Kalsubai Peak

This towering peak in the Sahyadri range, standing at 5,400 feet, offers a challenging yet rewarding trek. The trail, beginning from Bari village, winds through diverse landscapes—lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and eventually, exposed ridges. Though moderately difficult, the determination required is well rewarded by the breathtaking summit views. At the peak, the revered Kalsubai Temple provides a serene spot to absorb the panoramic vistas of Bhandardara Lake and the surrounding hills.

Nestled near Matheran, the trail winds through scenic landscapes – verdant plains dotted with villages, and cascading waterfalls during monsoon – and eventually leads to the Garbett Plateau. As you ascend, breathe in the fresh air and keep an eye out for diverse birdlife. If you’re on for a challenge, then this near-vertical trek is something you should definitely try. This trek isn't for the faint of heart - the climb involves a series of steep steps carved into the rock face, demanding upper body strength and sure footing. Although it's intense, the reward is unparalleled. At 3676 feet, Harihar Fort offers panoramic vistas of the surrounding Sahyadris. The historic fort, dating back to the Maratha era, boasts ancient temples, intricate carvings, and a unique water cistern.

This historical fort perched atop the Sahyadri ranges in Maharashtra spans around 3.5 kilometres, but is a difficult one to climb to. The trail, initially meandering through lush greenery, soon transforms into a series of challenging rock-cut steps and narrow passages. If you ascend with caution and determination, the reward at the top is truly spectacular. From the 2,300-foot peak, you'll be greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Prabalgad Fort and the glistening Arabian Sea. The fort itself offers remnants of its glorious past, including ancient temples, intricate carvings, and a well-preserved entrance gate.
