Hillsborough Deputy recovering after serious injury during traffic stop

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy Kalin Hall walked out of a hospital this weekend, to the applause of co-workers.

Hall was seriously injured on the night of July 4th when a suspected drunk driver ran over him with their car. Hall suffered a broken left leg and a fractured right ankle.

“I’m very, very thankful and blessed that everyone in the community and everyone has been reaching out for support. Not something I’d like to go through, but it is what it is at this point,” said Hall, an 11-year veteran of the sheriff’s office.

The night of the incident, Hall says he pulled over a black B.M.W. as part of a D.U.I. Enforcement effort.

“Obviously there were indicators of impairment with the way the operator was driving the car for the initial traffic stop,” said Hall.

After the initial traffic stop, the driver sped away, but Hall found the car again a short time later.

“An opportunity presented itself for me to try and block the car in. I expected the driver to flee on foot, was not expecting the car to be accelerating, and try to drive behind the back side of the car until it was too late.”

Other deputies responded and helped Hall and soon found the B.M.W., but this time the car was not occupied.

Tampa Attorney Chris Castillo worked for years as a prosecutor in Hillsborough County and says cases like this can be difficult to prosecute if there is no direct evidence of who was driving when the deputy was hit.

“That makes it even more difficult because that shows you have no direct evidence of identity in the case and what prosecutors want in the case, where they have to prove identity, which is all of them is direct evidence of who that person was who committed the crime, that’s been charged,” said Castillo.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says they know who the registered driver of the car is and are now working to prove who was driving at the time of the incident.

Castillo says prosecutors can work to obtain cell phone records to establish where the owner of the vehicle was at the time of the incident.

“The phone will be pinging towers, cell towers, as it passes through an area. they can use those towers to triangulate a person’s location,” said Castillo.

So far, no charges have been filed in the case.
