In the nine days following the CNN presidential debate that plunged President Joe Biden into a political crisis, his election rival former President Donald Trump has remained conspicuously and strategically silent, opting to mostly spend his time on the golf course.

Biden’s performance in the debate on June 27, where both candidates faced off, raised concerns about his mental fitness for office and left him facing calls that he should step down from the presidential race from both congressional lawmakers and donors.

Meanwhile, CNN senior journalist Edward-Isaac Dovere reported that Trump has “not left his golf course in New Jersey and has spent many hours on the links.” His last official public appearance was at a rally in Virginia on June 28.

Video did surface of Trump on a golf course days after the debate lambasting Biden as an “old, broken-down pile of crap” and criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris as “so fucking bad.”

In response, Trump’s 2024 campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung dismissed the allegations that Trump had stepped away from the campaign trail as “fake news.”

He told Newsweek: “Fake News by the Biden campaign. President Trump participated in a Fourth of July event last week and previously held a rally in Virginia. He’s also done numerous media interviews, unlike Biden who needs to be handed questions beforehand.”

Trump is scheduled for a Florida rally on Tuesday.
