Democrats raise doubts about Biden

Joe Biden will reportedly meet Democratic governors on Wednesday and sit down for a television interview on Friday—plans that were hastily arranged to reassure voters after prominent Democrats publicly voiced concerns about his performance in last week’s debate. They also criticised the campaign’s dismissive response to those concerns. Lloyd Doggett, a congressman from Texas, became the first Democratic lawmaker to urge Mr Biden to step down as the party’s nominee. Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, said it was “legitimate” to ask questions about the president’s abilities, and Jim Clyburn, a staunch ally of Mr Biden, said he would—hypothetically—back Kamala Harris, the vice-president, as a replacement candidate.
