The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has extended a partnership with Belgium to develop Nigeria’s blue economy and to leverage Belgian expertise in maritime technology and sustainable practices.

Receiving the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Pieter Leenknegt, Mr Oyetola highlighted the importance of the blue economy and Belgium’s commitment to becoming a leading maritime nation.

The Minister on his X handle noted that Belgium’s impressive maritime credentials, including its busy container ports and ranking in the European Union (EU), make it an ideal partner for Nigeria.

He said, “I received the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt, to discuss key issues regarding the blue economy, port development, and other areas of mutual interest.

“Belgium stands as a significant contributor within the EU in the realm of port activities, ranking 6th in Gross Value Added and 7th in employment. In maritime transport, Belgium ranks 7th and 11th, respectively. The country boasts some of the busiest container ports in the EU, including the Port of Antwerp, the Port of Zeebrugge, and the Port of Ghent.

“Recognizing the importance of the blue economy, the Belgian government is committed to becoming a leading maritime nation. This includes a focus on traditional sectors such as fishing, aquaculture, and sand extraction, alongside innovative sectors like ocean energy and carbon capture and storage.

“By leveraging Belgium’s expertise in maritime technology and sustainable practices alongside Nigeria’s vast marine resources and strategic location, both our nations have the potential to forge a mutually beneficial partnership in the blue economy sector.”
