A teenager has been arrested and accused of trying to gun down two people in Middletown earlier this year.

The teen was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree assault and a single count each of criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree breach of peace and commission of a felony with a firearm, according to the Middletown Police Department.

Police said the charges stem from an incident on April 24 just after 2:30 p.m., when officers responded to the intersection of Pearl and Court Streets on the report of a shooting. Investigators learned that a motorist driving on Court Street stopped at the intersection and got out of the vehicle before firing several rounds of gunfire at two “intended male targets,” according to police.

The males began to run before one of them, later identified as 19-year-old Chauncey Robertson, pulled out a handgun and began firing back, police said.

The initial shooter got back into the vehicle and left the area.

Multiple vehicles and residences in the area were struck by gunfire during the shooting.

Responding officers apprehended Robertson after a brief foot pursuit and recovered the gun he had, police said.

According to state court records, Robertson has been held on a $500,000 bond since his arrest. He faces charges of illegal discharge of a firearm, attempted first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal alteration of a firearm identifier and commission of a felony with a firearm.

During a lengthy investigation, police said they were able to identify the initial shooter as a 17-year-old from Middletown. They also learned that the vehicle he used had been stolen.

The teen was charged Monday after authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was detained and was expected to appear in juvenile court on Tuesday.
