The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Councils of Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to ensure smooth operations over the next four years.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, led the inauguration of the councils’ chairmen and members in Abuja, expressing the difficulty in making the decision, which had occupied his efforts for the past 10 months.

Prof. Mamman congratulated the appointees and emphasized the importance of non-interference in the daily management of human, financial, and material resources of the institutions.

He stated, “Councils are not to interfere with the day-to-day management of the institutions.” He urged the councils to generate internal revenue through diverse and innovative means and to collaborate with willing educational investors.

The councils are tasked with setting strategic directions, overseeing transparent financial management, and ensuring the institutions achieve national goals. Prof. Mamman also highlighted the importance of promoting responsible unionism and addressing issues like cultism, drug abuse, sexual harassment, theft, extortion, and inducement through effective strategies.

Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, stressed the necessity of adhering to the laws and regulations governing the institutions.

He remarked, “Compliance with these legal frameworks ensures that our institutions operate with integrity and accountability. It also safeguards the autonomy of our academic institutions while promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.”

Chief Wole Olanipekun, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, speaking on behalf of the Governing Councils, called for a harmonious relationship between the universities’ management and the councils. He urged caution in dealings and encouraged Vice Chancellors to allow councils to contribute positively to institutional improvement.

Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, congratulated the councils, assuring them of full support to enhance the university system.
