Four Persons Rescued From Amawbia Building Collapse

Two persons have been confirmed dead and one person injured following the collapse of a building under construction at the Eke-Amawbia market in Awka South local government area.

On arrival, ABS crew met men of the Anambra State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, Federal Road Safety Corps, key officials of the Awka South local government area, removing the rubble to rescue people trapped under it.

Commenting on the incident, the Programme Manager, Anambra State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, Dr Ugochukwu Chukwudebelu described the tragic incident as very unfortunate and said that the cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but two persons died as a result of the collapse while one person was rescued and he is receiving treatment at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.

He however assured that Anambra State government will foot his bill and commended all the relevant authorities that worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped inside the building.

On his part, the Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor bemoaned the ugly incident and assured that they will do everything necessary to figure out the cause of the building collapse and punish the perpetrators of the dastardly act accordingly to forestall a reoccurrence of such incident.

The member representing Awka South Two Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly and Deputy Speaker of the House, Honourable Chukwuma Okoye sympathized with the victims of the building collapse and assured that he will work with the relevant authorities to find out what caused it and do all that is necessary to prevent further building collapse in the area.

In his reaction, the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga who visited the scene described it as most unfortunate and said that four persons were rescued from the collapse and revealed that they are working closely with the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority to figure out what led to the building collapse.
