Newly Appointed Vice Chancellor Of Dominican University, Opara Meets With Principal Officers, Senate, Congregation

The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the Dominican University, Ibadan, Nigeria, Prof. Jacinta Opara has assured on  fostering an environment where intellectual curiosity thrives, where diversity and inclusion are not just embraced but celebrated, and where the students are prepared to become leaders and innovators in their respective fields.

Opara who gave this assurance in her maiden address at the meeting with Principal Officers and Senior Management of the University in Ibadan recently, stated that the management under her would prioritize cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of technology into the curriculum to ensure that the students receive a world-class education that would prepare them for the future.

Noting that strengthening the University’s ties with local, national, and global communities would enhance their relevance and impact, she said, “We will seek meaningful partnerships that provide real-world learning opportunities for our students and contribute positively to society.”

According to her, “As stewards of this institution, we have a duty to operate sustainably and responsibly. We will implement initiatives that promote environmental sustainability, fiscal responsibility, and social equity.

“Our faculty, staff, and students are the heart of this university. Investing in professional development, fostering a supportive work environment, and recognizing excellence will be paramount.

“From admissions to graduation, we must ensure that every student’s journey is enriching, supportive, and empowering. This includes improving facilities, expanding support services, and promoting extracurricular engagement.

“As we move forward, I am committed to maintaining open lines of communication and fostering a culture of collaboration. I encourage you all to share your ideas, insights, and feedback as we work together to shape the future of Dominican University.”

Addressing the University’s Senate, Prof. Opara disclosed that her approach would be one of collaboration, transparency, and inclusivity saying, “I firmly believe that the strength of our university lies in the collective efforts of our faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders. Together, we will strive to elevate our academic programs, expand our research capabilities, and enhance the overall student experience.”

She continued, “In the coming months, I look forward to engaging with each of you to understand your perspectives, aspirations, and concerns. Our shared goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive, innovate, and contribute to the betterment of our university and the society at large. By fostering a culture of mutual respect, continuous learning, and forward-thinking, we will navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.”

She, thereafter, appreciated the exceptional contributions of the outgoing Acting Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Dokun Oyeshola, OP saying, “Over the past six months, he has steered our university through both challenges and triumphs with unwavering dedication and a visionary approach.”

“Rev. Fr. Prof. Dokun Oyeshola, OP, under your stewardship, our university has achieved remarkable milestones. From enhancing academic standards to fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity, your leadership has laid a strong foundation upon which we can continue to build. Your commitment to academic excellence, research advancements, and community engagement has left an indelible mark on our institution. 

“On behalf of the entire university community, I extend our heartfelt appreciation for your tireless efforts and significant achievements. As we embark on this new chapter, I am inspired by the legacy you leave behind and am committed to furthering the mission and vision of Dominican University”, she added.

Speaking during her maiden engagement with the University’s congregation, the new Vice Chancellor who recalled that the university had a proud history of academic achievement, innovative research, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and dynamic learning environment, said, “As we move forward together, I am excited to build on this strong foundation, to address the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.”

She added, “My vision for our university is to create a nurturing environment where every member of our community feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential. We will strive to enhance our academic programs, promote interdisciplinary research, and strengthen our ties with industry, government, and the global community.

To the faculty, the new VC said, “your dedication to teaching, research, and service is the bedrock of our institution. I pledge to support your efforts in creating and disseminating knowledge, fostering innovation, and mentoring the next generation of leaders. We will prioritize initiatives that enhance teaching excellence, promote research that addresses pressing global issues, and support professional development opportunities for our academic staff.”

To the students, she said, “you are at the heart of our university. Your success is our primary mission. We will work tirelessly to ensure that you receive a transformative education that equips you with the skills, knowledge, and experiences needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. We will enhance student support services, expand opportunities for experiential learning, and foster a campus environment that is inclusive, safe, and vibrant.”

To the University’s staff, Prof. Opara said, “your contributions are vital to the smooth operation and success of our university. We will create a work environment that values your contributions, supports your growth, and recognizes your achievements. Together, we will foster a culture of collaboration, respect, and mutual support.”

She continued, “We shall recognise our alumni and partners; their continued engagement and support are crucial to our success. We will strengthen our alumni network, enhance opportunities for lifelong learning, and build strategic partnerships that advance our mission and extend our impact beyond the campus.

“Diversity and inclusion will be at the forefront of our efforts. We will work diligently to ensure that our university is a place where everyone feels welcome and where diversity of thought and background is celebrated. This commitment will be reflected in our policies, practices, and everyday interactions.

“We will also focus on sustainability and innovation. Our university will lead by example in promoting environmental stewardship, integrating sustainable practices into our operations, and fostering innovation in teaching, research, and community engagement.”
