Suspected gas station gunman makes first court appearance since shooting
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - One of the suspects arrested in connection to a gas station shooting that left a teenage boy in critical condition appeared in court Friday.
Online records show the court entered a preliminary plea of not guilty in 32-year-old Luther Lawton, Jr.’s case.
Additionally, the judge ordered Lawton to stay off the property of On the Fly Gas Station, where the shooting happened.
Police say Lawton fired a shot that struck a woman in the leg.
EPD officials say the other suspect, 31-year-old Otis Rankin, fired shots that hit a teenager in the head and a man in the chest.
Rankin is set to have another hearing on July 11 to address an early trial request.
Lawton is charged with gun possession by a felon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and battery with a deadly weapon.
