The logistics sector plays a crucial role in the economy, facilitating the movement of goods across vast distances. However, this sector is also a significant contributor to carbon emissions. As the world increasingly focuses on sustainability, it is imperative for logistics companies to adopt strategies that reduce their carbon footprint.

According to Martínez, a research scientist at the MIT Centre for Transportation and Logistics, freight transportation accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and its carbon footprint is projected to double by 2050. “As a responsible corporate citizen, we recognise the importance of taking action to mitigate this impact,” explains Ryan Gaines, CEO of City Logistics.

So, what lessons can be learnt from this industry about the innovative technology and equipment being used to reduce these emissions?

Optimising transportation routes

Route optimisation can drastically cut down on fuel use and emissions. Using sophisticated track and trace software incorporated into applications such as  OnRoute, drivers are able to receive optimised route plans as well as real-time routing updates which helps reduce unnecessary mileage and idle time. One study shows that route optimization can reduce the distance driven by 10%, fuel consumption by 11% and emission by 10% each month.

Battery-powered forklifts

Rechargeable electric forklifts have provided useful energy-saving systems. These power-efficient units make use of lithium batteries to increase performance and reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in warehousing facilities. “Electric forklifts represent a useful step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. They are relatively easy to source, and integrating them into existing processes is straightforward. This makes them an ideal choice for companies looking to improve their sustainability efforts,” comments Gaines.

Implementing sustainable packaging

Sustainable packaging can lower emissions at various stages of the supply chain, from production to disposal. One way is by implementing reusable packaging systems, such as returnable crates or containers which minimises the need for single-use packaging. This approach not only reduces waste but also promotes a circular economy by keeping materials in use longer and reducing the demand for new raw materials.

The logistics industry has several pathways to reduce its carbon footprint. By implementing fuel-efficient technologies, optimising transportation routes, and adopting green packaging solutions, the industry can make significant strides towards sustainability.
