Nigerian Observer 2024/10/6

The Lagos-Kano rail line has officially commenced freight operations, the Minister of Transportation, Saidu Ahmed Alkali, said on Thursday, emphasizing the economic opportunities and improved movement of goods the railway route would provide.

Alkali, in a statement, noted that the route’s trial run successfully moved numerous 40ft containers from Apapa Port in Lagos to Dala Inland Dry Port in Kano within a few days. He also mentioned the implementation of a regular inspection mechanism to prevent rail track vandalism.

“We are delighted to announce that today, June 6, 2024, the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will officially launch this critical railway corridor for freight. This route will create numerous business opportunities and facilitate the movement of import and export goods between key regions in the country,” Alkali said.

He highlighted the benefits of the railway service, including improved transportation, reduced road traffic accidents, lower costs of goods, and a boost to the GDP.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to continuing and successfully completing ongoing projects under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.
