DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — An apartment fire in Decatur resulted in two occupants being sent to the hospital early Sunday morning.

Just after 2 a.m., the Decatur Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment complex in the area of North Monroe Street and West McKinley Avenue. Upon arrival, crews saw smoke coming from the building. Officials said the origin apartment was occupied but the resident was able to escape.

The smoke spread from the apartment and through the building. Firefighters used fans to air it out and were able to quickly extinguish the fire using hoses. The situation was brought under control by 3:20 a.m.

Two occupants were taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital for breathing problems, officials said. The Red Cross assisted the occupant of the fire apartment in relocation plans, as their apartment received moderate damage.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the bedroom and was accidental, but the cause remains unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
