The various Transformers toy lines have featured several different takes on the iconic Autobot leader, Optimus Prime. Now, the newest iteration of the brand's collector-oriented line portrays a much darker take on the legendary Cybertronian.

Released under the new The Transformers: MPG series, this toy portrays Optimus' darkest form yet: Shattered Glass Optimus Prime. Although based on an existing toy, this new release is a grim mirror of the Autobot that fans know and love. Hailing from a dark universe where expectations are cruelly inverted, the upcoming Prime figure proves that freedom might not be the right of all sentient beings after all.

The Transformers: MPG Unleashes the Evil of Optimus Prime

The new Shattered Glass Optimus Prime figure has been revealed through a first look that showcases the toy's features. A repaint of the MP-44 Optimus Prime toy, this take is based specifically on the version seen in the "Shattered Glass" universe. This world is one in which the morality of the Transformers factions is reversed, featuring a universe where the Decepticons wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Autobots. Leading the latter is still Optimus Prime, who trades in his usual blue and red color scheme for a grimmer purple and green. The same goes for his new MPG toy, which gives the evil Autobot leader a bevy of cool accessories.

These include his iconic Ion blaster, which he can use to easily dismantle Decepticon do-gooders. His melee weapon is an energo-ax, which was first seen in the initial episodes of the 1984 cartoon The Transformers. He also has a version of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, which can be removed from his chest and held in his hands. Highly detailed and effortlessly evoking the design of a modernized G1 figure, this toy is a must-have for fans who can't get enough of Prime, evil or otherwise. It's soon to be officially announced and given a price tag of 33,000 yen (about US$210), although it won't be transforming and rolling out until March 2025.

Transformers: MPG Is the Newest Collector's Transformers Toy Line

The year 2024 marked the end of the beloved Transformers: Masterpiece toy line. These figures attempted to update the original toys for certain characters (namely those hailing from the original Generation 1 incarnation of Transformers) while also bringing their animation models to life. Since it began in the early 2000s, the line has expanded beyond just G1 to also include characters from Beast Wars and the live-action Transformers movies. It even gained a spinoff line in the form of The Transformers: MPG, which initially stood for Masterpiece Gattai and was made up of toys for the combining Trainbots.

Since then, MPG has become the premiere high-end Transformers line, with the G now standing for "great." So far, these figures have included the aforementioned Trainbots and their subsequent repaints, as well as repaints of non-combining Masterpiece toys, some based on the Diaclone action figures that became Transformers. One of them was MP-44, which is now seeing new life as MPG-12, Shattered Glass Optimus Prime. It's unknown if further entries in the line will be original molds, but confirmation of this and more may be coming throughout 2024. Given that this year is the 40th anniversary of the Transformers franchise, Shattered Glass Optimus Prime is likely just the tip of the iceberg in terms of announcements for the line.
