By mid-morning Sunday, the parking lots along White Rock's beachfront promenade were already filling fast, with many making a beach day a priority.

Plenty of parents were packing travel wagons full of floaties, sand toys, blankets, towels, coolers, snorkel masks, sunscreen and more in the parking lots, as stores and businesses along Marine Drive opened for the busy day, preparing their sidewalk patios for the public.

Many were enjoying the cooler air on the water in kayaks and on paddleboards, as others strolled along the pier, beach and promenade, iced coffees and water bottles in hand, as the temperatures rose.

Environment Canada expanded its heat warnings in the province early Sunday morning to include Metro Vancouver southeast, including Surrey and Langley, with elevated temperatures posing a "moderate risk" to public health.

Forecasting daytime high temperatures in the low to mid 30s, and in the high 20s near the water, the agency said daytime high temperatures are expected to moderate to the mid to high 20s starting Wednesday, but warm weather will likely persist. The heat warning is in effect until Tuesday night.

The federal agency reminded residents to watch for effects of heat illness, to never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, and that seniors – especially those with serious health conditions – are most at risk during periods of extreme heat, in particular, those who live independently.

Civic facilities in both Surrey and White Rock will be open during their regular operating hours for those needing a space with air conditioning, while misting tents and other pop-up locations are typically planned when an official heat warning is issued.
