As the powers-that-be become increasingly concerned with how much fuel our vehicles use and how many harmful emissions they emit, hybrid and electric powertrains are becoming a common sight. These days, nearly 17% of all vehicles on the roads in the US are hybrids, and that number is likely to increase as time goes on. Bearing those points in mind, it makes sense for pickup trucks to hop on the hybrid power craze.

However, as is the case with any pickup, it needs to do some things regular cars don't, like towing and hauling. So, these pickups need to be powerful, dependable, and long-lasting if they're to stand the test of time as a work vehicle. In the following write-up, CarBuzz looks at the most potent hybrid pickup trucks available.

The hybrid pickups shown in the following list do not include mild-hybrid setups. Specs and features have been sourced from Automobile-Catalog.com and individual manufacturer websites.

First up on our list of hybrid pickups is the Ford Maverick. Originally a coupe designed to compete with the likes of Datsun and Toyota in the late 1960s, Ford resurrected the nameplate in 2022 for its subcompact hybrid pickup. Since its comeback, the Maverick has seen respectable sales figures and has been generally well-reviewed by the automotive community. Not to mention, its base price of $23,200 makes it easy to get into a new one.

There are two engine options for the current Maverick. The first is a 2.5-liter non-hybrid inline-four, but we're focusing on the more powerful configuration, which consists of a 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost hybrid inline-four.

When it comes to mid-size pickups, the Tacoma is the most popular in its class. It's been around for nearly three decades and has always been coveted for its rugged dependability and simple engineering. While it's nearly impossible for a vehicle to be simple these days, the Tacoma still holds the hearts of loads of small truck fans thanks to its 29-year-old reputation.

The all-new Tacoma eliminated the old naturally aspirated V8 and replaced it with a more powerful turbocharged and hybridized four-cylinder. Do we miss the old engine? No.

You may be upset that the V6 is gone - but the truth is that the hybrid is so much better.

The F-150 needs no introduction. It's been the best-selling pickup for the last 47 years and the best-selling vehicle in the United States for the last 42. The reason for its long-lasting popularity is a perfect blend of reliability, toughness, and daily driveability. These core tenets have withstood the test of time, and it doesn't look like the F-150's crown will be taken from it any time soon.

Three years ago, the F-150 received a hybrid powertrain dubbed the PowerBoost. Basically, the PowerBoost hybridizes Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. This process also increases the 3.5's power, making it more powerful than the Coyote V8 option.

Toyota's full-size pickup, the Tundra, has lived in relative obscurity, outshined by the F-150, Silverado, and Ram pickups. However, just because it's not thought of doesn't mean it's no good. The Tundra has shown itself to be an extremely reliable truck in the past, although these days, it's been suffering from quite a few serious recalls. Regardless, the Tundra has definitely earned itself a good reputation over the last couple of decades.

Nowadays, you can option your Tundra to include a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 version of their i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. Recently, Toyota's 3.4-liter twin-turbo engine was recalled due to metal shavings being present in the block. While the i-FORCE has yet to be recalled, time will tell if it, too, suffers the same fate.

*All Ram 1500 Ramcharger specs are tentative per RamTrucks.com.

While the Ram 1500 Ramcharger has yet to be released, we feel it still deserves a spot on our list. While not a traditional hybrid, it is a hybrid in the sense that it uses gas and electricity. Basically, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 acts as a generator, which then charges a 92-kWh liquid-cooled battery pack. This electricity is then used to power the dual-motor electric powertrain. The V6 is not connected to the wheels at all and runs at optimal RPM to produce enough power to charge the battery. It's a way more effective use of the latent power in the fuel, and you don't have to worry about range anxiety.

As of now, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger's specs are targeted, meaning Ram estimates these will be accurate, but can't say for certain yet. However, Ram has a lot on the line with this revolutionary pickup, so it would be in their best interest to hit or get extremely close to their targeted specs.
