Prince Louis in line for new major royal title - but there's a catch

As the younger brother of a future King, Prince Louis is likely to inherit a Dukedom one day.

Trooping the Colour: Prince George tells Prince Louis to turn around

Prince Louis may be only six years old but he is still fifth in line to the throne, and as such is likely to be given an impressive royal title later in life.

His father Prince William will one day become King, and then his older brother Prince George after that but Louis and his sister Princess Charlotte will be given other honours.

King Charles's younger siblings all have titles, with Princess Anne being known as the Princess Royal and Princes Andrew and Edward being given the Dukedoms of York and Edinburgh respectively.

William and his younger brother Prince Harry were also both bestowed with the titles Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex on their wedding days.

It is possible that Louis could one day become the Duke of York, however, as his great-uncle Andrew currently holds the title he would need to wait until he passes away before he could inherit.

OK! magazine reported that Prince Louis may miss out on getting the title on his wedding day if Andrew is still alive if or when the youngster decides to marry.

The title Duke of York traditionally goes to the monarch's second-eldest son, meaning Louis is likely to be in line for it when William's time on the throne comes.

The late Queen Elizabeth's grandfather King George VI was the Duke of York until he became monarch following the abdication of Edward VIII, meaning she was Princess of Elizabeth of York until 1936.

Louis' older siblings are also likely to be given major titles as they get older, with George in line to become Prince of Wales as his father William and grandfather Charles did before him.

Charlotte is also in line to be the next Princess Royal, the same title held by her great-aunt Princess Anne whose children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall do not have royal titles.

The title Princess Royal is traditionally given to the monarch's eldest daughter and is the highest honour that the King or Queen can bestow upon a female family member.

Another possible title for Prince Louis is Duke of Cambridge, a title still held by his father having been given it on his wedding day in 2011.

But this seems a less likely choice as it may well go to the elder son Prince George first, unless Prince William becomes King before Louis' wedding day.

In that instance George may have already become Prince of Wales as heir to the throne, therefore Louis would be eligible to get the Cambridge title.
