Inspector-General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare has appealed for broad support as Ghana prepares for its upcoming general elections on December 7.

Addressing an eminent group convened by the Christian Council of Ghana in Accra on Thursday, July 4, Dr Dampare acknowledged the diligent efforts of the police and other security agencies in upholding peace and security. However, he underscored the necessity for collective effort and encouragement from all sectors of society.

“We wish you well in your roles and ask for your support and encouragement. Our work is challenging, and some elements must cherish our country’s peace and security. We need your backing to prevent evil forces from prevailing,” Dr Dampare emphasized.

Recognizing the pivotal role of religious leaders in fostering peaceful conduct among their followers, Dr. Dampare proposed regular engagement between police officers and congregants to discuss election security and address any concerns.

“Religious leaders play a crucial role in guiding their followers towards peaceful behaviour, and their support can significantly ease our work,” he stated.

Dr Dampare also highlighted the importance of unity and collective responsibility in safeguarding peace and security for future generations.

“We must think of our children and the legacy we leave for them. We must strive to leave behind a peaceful environment. In doing so, we honour our ancestors and ensure a better future for our children, regardless of their background,” he emphasized.

“Our readiness for the election is not just for today but for the future, which belongs to our children,” Dr. Dampare concluded.

The upcoming general elections in Ghana are anticipated to be closely contested, with various political parties and stakeholders gearing up for the campaign season.
