HITC sources can confirm that Chelsea have agreed a deal with Basel for their fifth signing of the summer under Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea have been very busy in the summer transfer market with former Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca being tasked with completing a turnaround at Stamford Bridge after the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues have already completed a raft of key signings including Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman and Barcelona forward Marc Guiu.

It appears that Chelsea are set to confirm their fifth signing of the summer with HITC understanding that Basel left-back Renato Veiga is closing in on a move to West London.

Chelsea close in on fifth signing of the summer

We have previously reported that a new left-back was one of Chelsea’s priorities this summer with the Blues previously interested in AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez.

Chelsea are keen on a new first choice option for the left side of defence and the Frenchman was viewed as an ideal option with AC Milan seeking £60 million for the sale of the former Real Madrid defender.

However, it appears Chelsea are keeping to the theme of signing young, up and coming players as sources confirm they have struck an agreement with Basel for the signing of Renato Veiga.

HITC has been told that Veiga is ready to challenge to be first-choice left-back/left wing-back at Stamford Bridge this summer – although he can also play centrally.

As mentioned, Chelsea have been doing work on left-back options this summer but they have settled on Veiga, who is set to cost the Blues £12 million.

Blues closing in on Portuguese under-21 international

The Portuguese defender only joined the Swiss side Basel last summer but it appears Stamford Bridge will be his next destination.

Interestingly, Veiga was signed following the sale of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori – who Chelsea have also looked at this summer, but he is strongly linked with joining rivals Arsenal.

Veiga is set to join the club and provide competition for Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella heading into the new season under the Italian manager Maresca.
