A dog rescued with a chain around her neck waited more than 100 days for a home — then came good news.

A Florida animal shelter said a woman “came straight from work to adopt Monique, knowing she was the dog for her! She and her family have always adopted senior dogs with medical issues, so that didn’t scare her off.”

On July 5, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay took to Facebook to share the heartwarming update that the woman adopted Monique. The mixed-breed dog started her next chapter after rescuers found her in February with a chain on her neck.

Regan Blessinger, marketing and content manager, said Monique lived at the humane society longer than many dogs. She’s heartworm positive, one reason that the shelter believes she was overlooked.

“She is super sweet,” Blessinger told McClatchy News in a phone interview. “But she was pretty mild mannered, and she’s large. So, we think those two factors had stopped people from adopting her until now.”

Over time, Monique became known as a happy, loving 5-year-old pup. She enjoyed playing with her canine friend Handson and was a favorite at the shelter’s summer camp for children.

“Monique was one of the dogs that they would play with,” Blessinger said. “She loved kids.”

Then after months of waiting, Monique’s luck took a turn. Her new owner raced to adopt her, leaving shelter workers emotional.

“She can’t wait to spoil her and make the rest of her life the best she’ll have,” the animal organization wrote. “After visiting with many staff and volunteers filled with smiles and tears, Monique was off to her forever home.”
