This deep-sea creature, known for its bioluminescence and unique adaptations to low oxygen levels, adds to researchers’ understanding of marine biodiversity.

Vampire squid’s never-seen-before species discovered, scientists surprised

Scientists have traced the second known living species of the vampire squid. They found it swimming in deep waters off Hainan Island in China. According to reports, this is recognized as the second known species of vampire squid globally.

These are mostly found in temperate and tropical ocean environments across various regions worldwide.

Characteristics and habitat of the newly discovered Vampire Squid

These species mostly inhabit the dark depths of the sea. This squid seems to be an intriguing one that has a length of 30 centimeters. It has around eight arms of feathery tendrils.

Despite its intimidating name, these species are generally harmless to humans. It mostly relies on marine snow as their primary source of food, and lives in the oxygen minimum zone of the sea. Most organisms do not survive there. Their bodies have a unique adaptability to survive in extremely low oxygen levels without many problems.

These creatures are bioluminescent, meaning they can create their own light, and attract several small, edible particles. Prior to this discovery, only one species had been officially recognized, described in 1903 after a deep-sea expedition by Carl Chun, a German marine biologist.

Some of the species that were discovered were little forms of V. infernalis, a squid that can grow a second set of fins close to its head. Its fins disappear as it ages. A marine biologist revealed that there have been ten synonymous species which showed some morphological differences in their various life stages.

This would be the second time that South China discovered a second species of vampire squid. The previous one was discovered around 2,600 to 3,000 feet below the sea surface. The experts are looking forward to analyzing more specimens that would showcase the nature and behavior of these kinds of species.

Importance of vampire squids in the South China Sea

The South China Sea is famous for its diverse and largely unexplored marine ecosystems. These vampire squids are actually unique creatures. This means they are neither true squids nor octopuses, and adapt extremely well to the harsh deep-sea environments. Their unique bioluminescent properties can help them confuse predators besides communicating.

Most researchers believe that the South China Sea provides the perfect environment for these creatures. These conditions help them survive in extremely low oxygen conditions. In the recent past the South China Sea played an important role in global marine biodiversity. Its waters are welcoming so as to accommodate organisms like vampire squids.

Researchers have been mostly intrigued by how these organisms survive in these low oxygen levels. Also, it’s a mystery as to how they add to the food web. The presence of these creatures in the South China Sea showcases the need for deep conservation in this region.

This indicates that human habits like overfishing, industrialization and pollution can threaten marine animals. The researchers emphasize that those areas where the vampire squids are present must be protected. This will help in maintaining the overall health of the marine lives and sustainability.

These vampire squids in the South China Sea will help researchers understand deep-sea ecology better. It will also help in practicising better conservation practices.
