Celtic told key player will end career in Glasgow and won’t reunite with Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham
Celtic hero Ange Postecoglou is coming under serious fire at Tottenham.
This is Postecoglou’s second season in charge of Spurs after his decision to depart Celtic during the summer of 2023 and test himself in the Premier League.
Ask any Celtic fans and they have fond memories of the 59-year-old because he took over the club when it was a mess and brought back the winning feeling.
From the style of play to the manner in which he conducted himself to the media, it was joyous, full of trophies and those are memories Celtic fans will cherish for the rest of their lives.
One thing Postecoglou didn’t, or still hasn’t done, since departing Glasgow, is reunite with a player he worked with at Parkhead.
It isn’t unusual for managers to sign players from their former clubs, especially given that the lure, money and quality of the Premier League is far higher than Scotland’s top tier.
Callum McGregor is a Celtic legend and he is racking up the trophies at his boyhood club, including winning the Treble when Postecoglou was in charge.
It was put to Barry Ferguson that Ange, given his troubles at Spurs, should perhaps look towards someone like McGregor.
But the former Scotland midfielder batted it away and stated that McGregor won’t leave and will finish his career at Celtic, as he told Go Radio.
Ferguson also explained how he has ‘no doubt’ that McGregor has the quality to cut it in the Premier League, but he just can’t see him moving.
“I can’t see Callum McGregor leaving Celtic,” responded Ferguson on Ange possibly taking him on. “I heard a few people saying that it’s similar to Paul McStay stuff. He signed a long-term contract, did he not? A year or so ago.
“I think Callum McGregor will see out his career at Celtic. Could he go down and play in the Premier League?
“I think he could. I have no doubt in my mind that he could play at that level. But I can’t see Callum McGregor leaving Celtic.”
It will be a difficult sight for Celtic fans to see as Postecoglou has no answers to Tottenham’s problems.
But perhaps he should be given a bit of leeway and the bigger picture needs to be looked at because there is a reason to.
Ferguson pointed towards Tottenham’s injury problems, especially at centre-back – Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero – and how their absence has been a ‘big disadvantage’ to Ange.
As Spurs fans saw when Postecoglou first joined and what he did at Celtic, when he gets going and puts his foot down, his teams are a serious watch and nobody can touch them.
“You see in terms of Spurs, I think their two biggest problems are the two centre-backs,” added Ferguson. “Romero and van de Ven. They are huge. They are solid and quick. Really good defenders.
“In terms of the form, I think that’s been a big disadvantage losing both of those players. I think Tottenham are a stronger team with both of them in it.”
