A car sparked panic on a busy motorway after it was seen hurtling towards oncoming traffic on a stretch of the M4. 

Terrified motorists reacted in shock after seeing a white Audi racing down the eastbound stretch of the motorway near Heston at 9:18pm on Friday. 

It was captured on video by the front seat passenger of a passing Tesla, who was left in a state of disbelief after the horror incident.

In the 10-second video, the Audi can be seen driving in the opposite direction in the fast lane of the motorway. 

The Tesla driver can then be heard frantically beeping his horn to try and alert the driver, who seems unphased by the danger they are causing to other motorists.

The passenger in the car can also be heard saying: 'What are you doing?

'Oh my God. What the hell.'

Other motorists have reacted with shock at the foolish driver, with one person fuming: 'What an idiot.'

Lee Friend joked: 'Yep, Audi driver,' while Maurice added: 'It's great when it's observed. But no one goes to the emergency phone.'

Motorists driving the wrong way down a motorway can be prosecuted for careless driving under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

They can be fined, given penalty points, or even disqualified.
