During the Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing Tinubu, conveyed these sentiments on Saturday evening.

In a statement titled ‘President Tinubu to public servants: Live up to your expectation as a public trust for accountability,’ issued by Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, Special Adviser to the Vice President on Media and Communication, Tinubu emphasized the need for public servants to uphold their roles as custodians of national trust.

VP Shettima delivered the president’s address, titled “Honouring the Heartbeats of Public Service,” highlighting, “Even though we have set in place institutional measures to forestall any form of dysfunction in our public service, there are still cracks often exploited by those given the trust of the nation.”

Tinubu’s concerns echo previous warnings about bureaucratic hindrances delaying worker benefits, reiterating that such inefficiencies are not just unacceptable but also undermine public trust in government operations.

He emphasized the imperative for Nigerian public servants to resist any attempts aimed at sabotaging national interests and to ensure accountability to the citizens they serve.

Furthermore, Tinubu underscored the administration’s commitment to fostering a merit-based environment where public servants are motivated to excel. He stressed the importance of embedding a culture of recognition and reward within Nigeria’s public sector to inspire positive change and uphold institutional values.

The Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service, a collaborative effort between the private sector and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, received Tinubu’s full endorsement. He described it as pivotal in setting benchmarks and motivating the nation’s workforce toward greater achievements.

Tinubu concluded by affirming that rewarding excellence and acknowledging dedication are fundamental to the progress of both public and private institutions, essential for achieving national development goals.
