A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has announced its readiness to actively participate in the forthcoming local government elections. The faction declared its preparedness to fully engage in the electoral process and nominate candidates for the elections.

The announcement comes following the unveiling of the election timetable by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), scheduled for October 5, 2024.

During a stakeholders’ meeting at RSIEC’s office in Port Harcourt, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retired), the RSIEC Chairman, assured stakeholders of a free, fair, and peaceful election process.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Darlington Nwauju, spokesperson for the APC faction, expressed support for RSIEC’s decision to engage stakeholders and adhere to the existing Law No. 2 of 1998, consistent with CFR 1999 (as amended).

“We commend RSIEC for not yielding to calls for tenure elongation of elected council officials who are mandated to serve for three years,” Nwauju stated.

He further emphasized the faction’s commitment to upholding the rights of Rivers State residents to freely elect their local government leaders, endorsing the adherence to established electoral laws in the state.

Nwauju also called upon all stakeholders, particularly security agencies, to ensure adherence to security advisories and prevent any attempts to distort the security situation in the state for political gain.

“We reject any form of political violence and advocate for the enforcement of the law against perpetrators,” Nwauju concluded, emphasizing that Rivers State residents deserve good governance, peace, and sustained development, affirming that the state is governed by the rule of law.
