For more than 100 years, the formula for building sports cars has been pretty straightforward. The process is best summed up by the legendary engineer and Lotus founder Colin Chapman, who said the best way to build fast cars is to simplify and add lightness. Mr. Chapman’s rationale for this statement was that if you give a car more power, it gets faster on the straight, but reducing the car's weight makes you quicker everywhere.

It has been more than 40 years since Mr. Chapman left us for the big racetrack in the sky, and his philosophy is still the cornerstone of most motor racing. However, due to technological advancement, consumers expecting more standard luxury features, and increasing government regulations, companies are pushing to build EVs that are naturally heavier than traditional internal combustion engines.

Despite all the added bulk, auto manufacturers still build some truly blistering fast cars that can hit 60 mph in under two seconds in some cases. From screaming V12s to fully electric hypercars, we will cover the ten heaviest sports cars driving on the roads today.

How we made our model selection: HotCars looked at all the brand-new sports cars selling in 2024 and ranked them based on their curb weights. Only 2-door coupes, convertibles, and mid-engined supercars were considered for this list. We ranked all the entries from lightest to heaviest.

10 2023 Mustang Dark Horse: 3,752 lbs

The Ford Mustang is an iconic car with almost 60 years of production under its belt. Unfortunately, that belt has gotten much larger since it was introduced in 1965. A base first-generation Mustang weighed 2,445 lbs, roughly the curb weight of an early 2000s Mazda Miata. Fast-forward two years, and Ford had already increased the Mustang's weight by almost 800 pounds in the GT500.

The GT500 was much heavier because of the massive 7.0-liter V8 engine, which produced 355 hp and 420 lbs.-ft. of torque. Those power figures show how much times have changed because the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse may weigh 500 pounds more than its grandfather; it produces 500 hp and 418 lbs.-ft. of torque from a 5.0-liter V8. All that grunt allows the new Dark Horse to hit 60 mph in under four seconds to a top speed of 166 mph.

Ferrari is the most successful team in Formula One history, with 16 constructors' championships and 245 race wins as of 2024. With such a historic racing pedigree, it only makes sense for that performance to trickle down to their road cars, and the 2024 Ferrari 812 GTS is no exception.

The 812 GTS is an evolution of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta with more power, newer technology, and revised styling. Ferrari’s latest grand tourer is driven by a 6.5-liter front-mounted V12 producing 789 hp and 530 lbs.-ft. of torque. All that power channels to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Despite being on the heavier side as far as Ferraris go, the 812 GTS is capable of 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds with a top speed of 211 mph.

Lotus was technically founded in 1948 when Colin Chapman built his first race car in his garage. Throughout the years, Lotus produced many winning Formula One cars for some of the biggest names in the sport, including Sterling Moss, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, and more. While Lotus is no longer in Formula One, Mr. Chapman’s legacy lives on with their latest creation, the Evija.

The 2024 Lotus Evija is the company's first all-electric hypercar, developed in conjunction with Williams Advanced Engineering. It is propelled by a 93-kilowatt-hour battery pack driving four electric motors. Each motor drives a single wheel and produces 503 hp, for a combined total of 2,011 hp and a pavement-shredding 1,257 lbs.-ft. of torque.

Weighing in at 4,160 lbs., the Evija is light for an electric vehicle. However, even with that much weight, the Evija can hit 60 mph in under 3 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. If you want the most mind-blowing stat, the Evija can go from a standstill to 190 mph in just over 9 seconds.

The BMW M8 was released in 2019 as the successor to the BMW M6. It has three body configurations: a coupe, a convertible, and a four-door model named the Gran Coupé. The 2024 M8 is powered by the BMW S63 engine, a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 pumping out 617 hp and 553 lbs.-ft. of torque in this spec. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission mated to BMW’s Xdrive all-wheel drive system.

Even with the 2024 M8 weighing over 4,000 lbs, it can go from zero to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. It can easily reach its electronically limited top speed of 155 mph in all three body configurations. Even with many optional carbon fiber trinkets to slightly reduce the weight and add the illusion of more performance, the M8 has abysmal fuel economy with just 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

6 2024 Aspark Owl: 4,409 lbs.

Via-Archyde

Aspark is a Japanese engineering company founded in 2005 that provides components to auto manufacturers. In 2017, Aspark unveiled its first vehicle concept, an all-electric supercar named the Owl. The Owl is constructed mostly from carbon fiber, including the bodywork and a full monocoque chassis weighing only 265 pounds.

Specs

The Owl’s chassis might only weigh as much as a large dirt bike, but the batteries and electric motors raise its curb weight to a little over 4,400 pounds. Aspark Owls are powered by a 69-kilowatt-hour battery pack driving four electric motors, churning out 1,980 hp and 1,475 lbs.-ft. of torque. The 2024 Aspark Owl can reach 60 mph in just 1.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 256 mph.

At the moment, there are only four Owls in existence and a planned production run of 50 cars so don’t expect to see an Aspark Owl at your local car meet anytime soon.

The SL name is believed to mean Super Leicht, which translates to “Super Light,” and the modern Mercedes is far from that, packing on close to 2,000 pounds from the original 1950s model. While the 2024 SL 63 AMG is bloated compared to the classic 300 SL, the power output has almost quadrupled. The 2024 SL produces 577 hp and 590 lbs.-ft. of torque from a hand-crafted 4.0L bi-turbo V8. Mercedes hand-built V8 drives all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. Even with the added weight, the 2024 SL63 AMG reaches 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

4 2024 Pininfarina Battista: 4,548 lbs.

A 120-kilowatt-hour battery pack produced by my Rimac Automobili powers the 2024 Pininfarina Battista, which is sent to four electric motors, one driving each wheel. The almost $2 million hypercar dishes out 1,900 hp and a monumental 1,725 lbs.-ft. of torque, making the Battista the most powerful Italian production car in history. The Battista can achieve 0 to 60 mph in just 1.86 and owns the record for the faster quarter-mile time of any production car at 8.55 seconds.

3 2024 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport: 4,586 lbs.

Bugatti-Chiron_Super_Sport_300-2021-1280-0f (1)

Constructed primarily from carbon fiber, the 2024 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport tips the scale at almost 4,600 pounds, roughly the weight of a full-grown rhinoceros. While the Chiron may weigh as much as a hooved African animal, it doesn’t move like one.

The Bugatti Chiron shares many components with its predecessor, the Veyron, including its 8.0L quad-turbocharged W16 engine. However, the Chiron Super Sport produces a staggering 1,578 hp and 1,180 lbs.-ft. of torque. That massive grunt propels the Chiron Super Sport to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds and can reach an electronically limited top speed of 273 mph. If Bugatti knows the actual top speed of the Chiron Super Sport, they aren’t telling. The company states that the electronic limiter protects the tires from melting at such high speeds.

2 2023 Rimac Nevera: 5,100 lbs.

Rimac is a Croatian electric vehicle manufacturer. Its first car, the Concept One, is famously on the long list of cars that tried to send Grand Tour presenter Richard Hammond to an early grave because he didn’t recognize that a checkered flag meant the race was over.

Rimac’s latest creation, the Nevera, increases the Concept One's earth-shattering performance figures with 1,888 hp and 1,741 lbs.-ft. of torque. All that power is generated by a 120-kilowatt-hour battery pack driving four electric motors. The 2023 Rimac Nevera can hustle to 60 mph in 1.85 seconds and do the standing quarter-mile in 8.6 seconds, barely losing out to its sister car built in the same factory, the Pininfarina Battista.

1 2024 Maserati GranTurismo Folgore: 5,147 lbs.

At a whopping 5,147 pounds, the 2024 Maserati Gran Turismo Folgore tops our list of the heaviest sports cars on the roads today. Folgore, Italian for lighting, is a label that will adorn all Maserati electric vehicles. Unlike most of the electric cars on our list, the Gran Turismo Folgore is powered by three electric motors, one for each rear wheel and a single motor for the front axle.

Power is delivered to all four wheels via an 83-kilowatt-hour battery pack producing 751 hp and 995 lbs.-ft. of torque. The Gran Turismo Folgore has a range of 242 miles and can reach 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, making it a full second quicker than its petrol-powered cousin. However, that extra second of performance comes at quite a cost because the Folgore starts at $50,000 more than the standard Gran Turismo.
