IT is not every day you can say you took to the stage right before a Hollywood star.

But that is exactly what St Helens’ Jack Bennet is able to say after entertaining a crowd awaiting the arrival of Russell Crowe.

Gladiator actor Crowe took to the stage at Parr Hall in Warrington last night, Thursday, in a singing capacity with his band, The Gentleman Barbers, and Lorraine O’Reilly.

The 60-year-old came from down under to Warrington as part of his Indoor Garden Party tour – which has also seen him perform at the Colosseum in Rome.

Singer-songwriter Bennett, the former frontman of indie band Stillia, was one of the warm-up acts – and he certainly delivered.

During a brief set, he performed some of his own songs as well as covers of well-known hits, including Dirty Old Town by The Pogues, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da by The Beatles and Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in The Wall.

The 28-year-old, from Sutton, has the crowd singing along and tapping to the beat, before taking his seat alongside one of St Helens’ favourite sons, Johnny Vegas.

The pair enjoyed the rest of the Crowe gig, which was also attended by Warrington Wolves head coach and former England star Sam Burgess.
