CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol says charges are expected after an accident Sunday morning left two people dead.

Highway Patrol says yesterday morning troopers were called to a car crash involving three cars on Highway 58 near Old Church Road.

Troopers say, Steven Shelton, 48, was traveling north when he attempted to pass another vehicle and hit Dale Mangum, 64, of Angier who was traveling south. After hitting Mangum head-on, he collided with a Subaru Outback that was also traveling south.

The Highway Patrol says Mangum and the passenger in the car, 59-year-old Tammy Witham, of New Bern, died at the scene from injuries brought on by the crash.

Shelton was flown to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. The Subaru driver was not injured.

After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, the Highway Patrol says charges will be forthcoming.
