Job Description

We are currently looking to appoint a Mining & Metals Lead for the Africa region. You will join our Africa Energy & Natural Resources team to help drive outcomes that help our clients devise strategies to deliver successful business solutions prior to sanction, achieve confidence around project delivery, ensure projects are effectively managed and controlled, and facilitate the capture and transfer of knowledge.

As Mining & Metals Lead you will have wide-spread exposure to the business environment and our clients within the Energy & Natural Resources space. You will have authority to act in the name of Turner & Townsend and your actions will have a considerable impact on the future direction and success of the business. Successful candidates should have a proven track record in managing people/teams, business development and client management in the consulting environment, and have an excellent understanding of the Mining industry’s best practice across the life cycle of mining projects. The role will be based permanently in South Africa, Nigeria, or Kenya, with an expectation to travel across Africa.

The successful candidate will help grow our network and exposure in the mining sector across Africa and with other companies in the Energy & Natural Resources supply chain to improve uptake of clean energy and decarbonisation into corporate and site-based strategies and action. As the successful candidate, you will be playing a crucial part in shaping the future of our Energy & Natural Resources business.

Duties of a Mining Director

The Mining & Metals Lead will have responsibility, amongst others, for the service stream in terms of Project Resourcing, Best Practice and Knowledge Management, Tools & Systems, Key Account Management, Service Opportunity Identification, and Service Development. You will continue to promote the interests of Turner & Townsend giving the full benefit of your knowledge, expertise, and skills to all your business undertakings.

Expectations

In undertaking the role of Mining & Metals Lead, Turner & Townsend have specific expectations to be met. The expectations will form part of your continuous development and performance measurement. These are set out as follows:

Business Development

You will continue to build relationships with your network of clients. Share industry best practice and assist other Turner & Townsend offices to develop opportunities with your clients who have a presence, or an ambition to develop one, in their regions. You will be attuned to potential client needs within the mining industry and will work collaboratively with other directors to optimise service offerings of total program management to one anothers clients. You will have a natural proactive approach to conceiving initiatives to sell Turner & Townsend service offerings to existing and new clients. You will make decisions on new initiatives and form alliances with consultants, contractors and service providers whose service offering is complimentary to Turner & Townsend. Your primary focus will be on business generation and delivery across Africa, catering to our 4 strategic hubs in RSA / SADC, West and East Africa.

Service Delivery

Total service delivery to all mining clients within Africa. Your reporting structure with other directors will ensure that you are best placed to direct resources to maximise return. As the Mining & Metals Lead you should encourage opportunities for the professional development and advancement of all your staff under your supervision.

Qualifications

  • Professional Registration is preferred
  • Must have PM, QS or Engineering background with experience within the Natural Resources and must have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in a senior role in the Mining sector, preferably in advisory or consulting. 
  • Experience of consulting within mining projects and supply chains and/or of developing or contributing to programmes delivering strategic or landscape-scale change
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills with experience in presenting complex concepts to a business audience
  • Extensive experience within the mining industry is mandatory
  • Essential to have a proven track record for winning work, growing businesses and must have held a senior position in a large company
  • Experienced in Business Development, managing client relationships and delivering successful projects in Africa.  
  • Understanding of Major Projects delivery requirements in Africa 
  • Proven ability to analyse complex problems, interpret operational needs and develop integrated, creative solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage and lead effectively in a team environment
  • Must be willing to travel for business purposes. Develop and support work proposals to new and existing clients. 
  • Collaborate with partners from civil society and industry groups, such as chamber of mines in the various mining Jurisdictions across Africa
  • Help expand our global business network in the mining sector, engaging with new and existing clients and partners.
