MANILA, Philippines, July 4: Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has thrown his weight behind efforts to safeguard the Masungi Georeserve in the Philippines, highlighting its critical role in biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism. In a recent Instagram post, the Oscar winner and environmental advocate recounted the reserve’s journey, from illegal deforestation in the late 1990s to its transformation into a thriving ecosystem through community-driven conservation initiatives.

DiCaprio expressed concern over recent threats to Masungi, particularly the potential cancellation of its protective agreement by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This move, he warned, could pave the way for detrimental activities such as mining, logging, and illegal developments, jeopardizing years of conservation progress.

“Conservation successes like Masungi demonstrate the Philippines’ potential as a leader in sustainability, eco-tourism, biodiversity protection, and climate action,” DiCaprio emphasized, urging Philippine President Ferdinand “BongBong” Marcos Jr. to intervene and ensure continued protection for the reserve.

Masungi Georeserve, located in Baras, Rizal, is renowned for its lush rainforest landscape and serves as a habitat for over 400 species of flora and fauna, including rare plants like the Jurassic Plant found only in Luzon. The reserve is also a popular hiking destination, attracting nature enthusiasts from around the world.

Recent developments, however, have cast a shadow over Masungi’s future. According to statements from the Masungi Georeserve Foundation, the DENR’s intention to revoke the 2017 Memorandum of Agreement poses a significant threat. DENR Secretary Ma. Antonia “Toni” Yulo-Loyzaga’s announcement of a pending decision has sparked widespread concern among conservationists and supporters of Masungi.

In response to these challenges, DiCaprio has amplified efforts to protect Masungi, aligning with other global and local celebrities who have voiced their support. Dr. Jane Goodall, Greta Thunberg, Sting, and local personalities like SB19’s Justin, Nadine Lustre, and Glaiza De Castro have joined the chorus advocating for the preservation of Masungi Georeserve.

As the campaign gains momentum, stakeholders await the DENR’s final decision, hoping it will uphold Masungi’s status as a protected forest reserve and safeguard its invaluable biodiversity for future generations.
