Police reportedly suspected Nyah and a friend with him at the time of being involved in the robberies as officials had described the suspects as “Asian males who brandished a black in color firearm and forcibly demanded and stole property from victims,” according to Rome Sentinel

Additionally, the suspects were reportedly described as one walking and one being on a bicycle.

Body camera footage obtained by the outlet now shows the moments when the two teenagers were stopped by police and the events that unfolded before Nyah was shot.

In the footage, one of the officers is seen approaching the juveniles, informing that they were being stopped after Nyah was seen walking and his friend riding in the roadway.

The officer, identified as Bryce Patterson, informed Nyah to keep his hands out of his pockets and asked if he could pat him down to check for any weapons.

At first, the 13-year-old raised his hands but then is seen sprinting away in the footage.

Patterson, accompanied by Officers Patrick Husnay and Andrew Citriniti can then be seen chasing after the boy.

At one point in the blurry video, the teenager points what appears to be a weapon at the three officers.

As Patterson tackled Nyah to the ground, Husnay fired a single shot at the teenager.

“Drop it! Drop it!” Husnay can be heard shouting amidst the chaos.

The video then shows Patterson providing medical attention to Nyah while saying, “I don’t know if he shot me.”

Meanwhile Husnay and Citrinti are heard reporting the incident as well as calling for backup and an ambulance.

Police have since revealed that in the moment, the officers believed the teenager had been holding a handgun towards them following the foot chase, according to the Associated Press

However, it was later discovered that Nyah was actually holding a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun.

While the replica gun appears to look identical to a working firearm, it is only able to fire pellets or BB.s, a police spokesperson told the Associated Press.

Who shot Nyah Mway?

Nyah Mway, 13, was shot and killed on Friday night after police stopped him and another teenager during an armed robbery investigation in Utica, New York.

After being stopped, Nyah ran from police and a foot chase ensued.

Body camera footage shows him pointing what appears to be a handgun at the officers.

At that point, one gun shot is heard.

Officer Patrick Husnay fired the shot at the teenager.

Husnay has been with the Utica Police Department for six years.

Following the incident, Nyah was taken to Wynn Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

All three officers have since been placed on administrative leave with pay.

Husnay is a six-year veteran of the Utica Police Department.

A 2019 performance review of his duty as a street patrol officer revealed that his superiors believed he needed to “improve his command presence while on scene of volatile situations” as well as his investigative/problem solving skills.

The performance review attributed this need for improvement to Husnay being a new officer at the time.

Nyah has since been identified as an 8th grade student at Donovan Middle School and a refugee born in Myanmar.

He was also a member of the Karen ethnic minority.

Uticia is home to more than 4,200 people from Myanmar.

His death sparked outrage among locals and those a part of the Karen community.

Some, including Nyah’s brother Lah, have reportedly called for the officers involved to be jailed.

Lay Htoo, Nyah’s uncle, told ABC News he was saddened by the newly released footage.

“They make me feel very, very sad. You know, seeing the one [of] my nephew [killed],” Htoo told the outlet of the images released.

“My nephew is a very good kid. He’s never done this before.”

The Utica Police Department has launched an internal investigation into the incident to determine if the shooting was justified.

Additionally, the New York Attorney General’s Office has started its own investigation.

The Utica Police Department did not immediately respond to The U.S. Sun’s request for comment.
