You Can't Ignore The First DCU Release, Thanks To A New Superman Tease
A new Superman tease is now making it impossible for the first release of the DC Universe to be ignored, and that’s a great thing for this franchise. The many highs and lows (though more of the latter) of the DC Extended Universe led Warner Bros to rethink its plan when it comes to its DC Comics properties, and it’s now preparing for the launch of the DC Universe. Led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the DC Universe will keep some of the DCEU characters and actors while recasting many others and introducing new characters, as well.
The main purpose of the DC Universe is to create a united continuity across all live-action and animated movies, TV shows, and video games. The DC Universe, then, will kick off with the animated TV series Creature Commandos, based on the team of military superhumans of the same name. The Creature Commandos is unlike any other team seen before in the DCEU, as it’s formed by a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, a gorgon, and a Frankenstein’s monster. Creature Commandos is scheduled for a December 2024 release, and thanks to a Superman tease, it will be a must-watch.
Here's everything you need to know about the Creature Commandos DC show, including the Creature Commandos team members and their comic book history.
Frank Grillo will not only voice Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos but also play the character in live-action thanks to Superman .
Creature Commandos will kick off the DC Universe in general, but the film branch will begin in 2025 with James Gunn’s Superman. This new take on Superman will follow Clark Kent (David Corenswet) during his time as a young journalist for the Daily Planet as he does his best to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive human family in Smallville, Kansas. Corenswet’s Superman will be accompanied by Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hulot), and The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), as well as the Creature Commandos’ leader, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo).
The latter came as a surprise as Grillo will not only voice Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos but also play the character in live-action thanks to Superman. Set photos and videos confirmed Rick Flag Sr.’s role in Superman, showing him and The Engineer arresting the Man of Steel. It’s unknown what Flag Sr.’s role in Superman will be, but his appearance is putting a lot more importance on Creature Commandos. The TV show will not only be Flag Sr.’s introduction, but it will also be key in establishing his role in the DC Universe and Superman.
Rick Flag Sr. showing up in Superman shows the DC Universe is keeping its promise and won’t waste time bringing its characters together.
As mentioned above, the purpose of the DC Universe is to create the connected universe that the DCEU failed to, and this includes live-action and animated TV shows as well as video games. Rick Flag Sr. showing up in Superman shows the DC Universe is keeping its promise and won’t waste time bringing its characters together. Having the same actors voicing the characters and playing them in live-action should make this connection a lot smoother, and it’s to be seen if those on the live-action branch will cross over to the animation one.
These crossovers also ensure that each project, whether a TV show, movie, or video game, will be given the same importance in this universe, as they will have some influence on the rest. Creature Commandos was already an exciting and interesting project, but having it tie into Superman makes it even more exciting and a lot more important than it initially seemed.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill's departure from the role, honoring the character's roots as "the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way."
