From Kane and Saka to Pickford and Watkins, every England player’s penalty record ahead of Euro 2024

talksport.com 3 days ago

England continue their quest for Euro 2024 glory tonight with a last-16 clash against Slovakia and will hope to avoid a dreaded penalty shootout.

The Three Lions' spot-kick fortunes have improved under Gareth Southgate but failures from 12 yards have defined their past two tournament exits.

England suffered an agonising shootout defeat in the final of Euro 2020 against Italy, before a late Harry Kane penalty miss led to a World Cup quarter-final exit to France in Qatar.

The national team's miserable record from the spot is well documented, with only three wins from ten shootouts in major tournaments.

Two of those victories have come under Southgate, who can rely on several accomplished takers in Germany this summer should they be needed.

However, England will be without one of their most seasoned takers in Harry Maguire, who had featured in nine shootouts and scored two of the spot-kicks he had taken for his country.

Every England player's penalty record

Harry Kane

The Three Lions captain suffered one of the lowest moments of his career from the spot with that miss against France.

But Kane is usually deadly from 12 yards, and in fact, hasn't failed to convert a penalty for club or country since his World Cup miss.

The striker dispatched two penalties against Italy in Euro qualifying, and even notched against both Manchester United and Arsenal in Bayern Munich's run to the Champions League semi-finals.

  • England penalties scored during regular play: 21/25
  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 2/2
  • Total penalties scored during regular play: 74/85
  • Total penalties missed during regular play: 11/ 85

Bukayo Saka

The 22-year-old will be hoping for spot-kick redemption in Germany after becoming one of Europe's best takers in recent years.

Saka had the hardship of missing the deciding penalty in England's Euro final defeat to Italy, for which he received disgraceful racial abuse.

Nine months after that Wembley heartbreak, Saka rose to shoulder the burden for Arsenal and has barely put a foot wrong since.

The attacker has converted 10 of the 11 penalties he's taken at club level since April 2022 with only a 2-2 draw with West Ham last year denying him a perfect record.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/1
  • Total penalties scored during regular play: 12/14 (10 at senior level)
  • Total penalties missed during regular play: 2/14 (1 at senior level)

Kieran Trippier

The Newcastle defender has a curious relationship with penalties, having never scored one in regulation time during his club career.

Trippier missed a decisive spot-kick during Tottenham's 2-0 FA Cup fourth-round exit at Crystal Palace in January 2019.

He was then a surprising pick for Atletico Madrid when he missed inside two minutes of their 2-0 Champions League triumph over Lokomotiv Moscow.

Trippier then saw his perfect shootout record end when he missed in a Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea in December.

Fortunately, he kept his nerve in the only penalty he's ever taken for England - the penultimate kick in the 2018 World Cup win over Colombia.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Total penalties taken during regular play: 0/2
  • Career record: 3/6

Jordan Pickford

England's No.1 is normally Southgate's hero when it comes to saving penalties during shootouts.

It was Pickford's save from Carlos Bacca that allowed Eric Dier to be the man to win the Three Lions their first-ever World Cup shootout.

The Everton keeper also stopped two Italian penalties in the Euro 2020 final but his heroics ultimately proved to be in vain.

In between those two tournaments, Pickford proved he would be just as adept at scoring should he be needed having fired past Yann Sommer before saving Josip Drmic's kick in the Nations League.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Total penalties saved in England shootouts: 4
  • Total penalties saved during regular play: 8

Ivan Toney

The Brentford striker showed exactly what he brings to this England squad when he bagged from the spot against Belgium in March.

In the absence of Kane, Toney confidently stepped up to dispatch his spot-kick in the 2-2 draw with the Red Devils.

Toney - who was hailed by his manager Thomas Frank as ‘the world’s best penalty taker’ - has only ever missed two of his 30 spot-kicks, with just one since his days in League One for Peterborough.

The 28-year-old's sole failure in six years came against Newcastle but he made amends by scoring a second penalty in the same half.

  • England penalties scored during regular play: 1/1
  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Total penalties scored: 30/32
  • Total penalties missed: 2/32

Cole Palmer

Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was adamant Palmer was his main penalty taker following a bust-up during a 6-0 win over Everton in April and the evidence shows why!

Despite having never taken a one at senior level, the 22-year-old stepped up to score his first goal for the Blues since moving from Man City from the spot in a 4-1 victory over Burnley in October.

Since then, Palmer has been among the most confident takers in world football having converted his next nine for the club.

The attacking midfielder shushed Tottenham fans after a penalty in November, denied his former club City with a last-gasp spot-kick equaliser, and stuck away two in the same game against Man United.

Palmer even has an unblemished record in shootouts, having scored in Chelsea's Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Newcastle.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Total penalties scored: 13 (9 at senior level)
  • Total penalties missed: 0

Jude Bellingham

The Real Madrid superstar hasn't been involved in a shootout with England yet but would likely relish the opportunity to take one.

Having shown his sneaky side in trying to put Kane off from the spot, Bellingham's mentality has also been listed as one of his core assets.

The 20-year-old hasn't missed any of the three penalties he has presided over for Borussia Dortmund and now in Madrid.

The midfielder also proved he can keep his nerve in a shootout having cooly scored in the Champions League win over Man City.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Penalties scored during regular play: 3/3

Phil Foden

The Premier League's Player of the Year is again another star who is not a regular penalty taker for club or country.

However, Foden does have experience of stepping up in shootouts after netting in the 2019 Community Shield triumph over Liverpool.

He then unfortunately became the only player to miss from the spot when West Ham knocked Man City out of the Carabao Cup for the first time in FIVE YEARS in October 2021.

Foden has since bounced back this season, having scored City's fourth penalty in their Champions League quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 2/3
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 0

Ollie Watkins

The Aston Villa hitman drew great plaudits for scoring 19 non-penalty Premier League goals this season.

All three of Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, and Palmer above him in the Golden Boot race relied on spot-kicks to boost their numbers.

However, Watkins' record from the spot may give some indication as to why he wasn't Villa's go-to man - and it is yet to be seen whether he is trusted in a shootout by Southgate.

Unusually for a striker, Watkins has a negative penalty record, with more misses from 12 yards than efforts that have found the net.

His performances in shootouts are at least slightly better, having scored in Brentford's EFL Cup defeat to Cambridge in 2019, and this season in Villa's Europa Conference League triumph over Lille.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 2/2
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 9
  • Penalties scored during regular play: 4

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool's vice-captain was once a regular taker in England's youth ranks, scoring four from four from October 2016 to March 2017.

Opportunities to take a penalty for club and country have been few and far between since turning professional.

However, Alexander-Arnold was consistently one of Jurgen Klopp's five preferred takers during shootouts for Liverpool.

The 25-year-old scored from the spot in the finals of the 2019 Super Cup, 2022 Carabao Cup and FA Cup - all of which were against Chelsea.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 3/3
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 0

Kyle Walker

The Man City defender has been vocal about his dislike of taking penalties and rarely takes one.

Walker has never taken a spot-kick during regular play in his career, but he has scored both of his two attempts in shootouts.

The 34-year-old most recently did convert City's winning kick in their Super Cup victory in Athens over Sevilla last August.

His only other penalty came in Tottenham's mammoth 2013 League Cup shootout 8-7 victory against Hull following a 2-2 draw.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 2/2
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 0

John Stones

Like his City teammate Walker, Stones rarely takes penalties but unlike his close pal, he's much more confirmed from the spot.

The 29-year-old memorably scored a Panenka for Everton in a friendly win over Juventus in 2013.

He has also stepped up for the Toffees in competitive games as well having scored in the Blues' FA Cup defeat to West Ham in 2015.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 0

Luke Shaw

England's first-choice left-back had an unlucky relationship with penalty shootouts having lost his first two in quick succession.

Shaw was one of the 10 outfield stars to score from the spot in Man United's 11-10 Europa League final defeat to Villarreal in May 2021.

Just two months later, having netted England's only goal against Italy, the 28-year-old watched as the Three Lions were beaten on penalties.

Shaw managed to break his losing shootout duct after Man United overcame Brighton in 2023's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 0

Declan Rice

Arsenal splashed £105m on Rice last summer for a lot of things but taking a penalty was not one of them.

As an academy player with Chelsea, the 25-year-old missed three decisive spot-kicks in tournament shootouts.

Having moved to West Ham where he rose through the ranks and became captain, Rice attempted to change his penalty fortunes.

However, the midfielder missed two of the three he took for the Irons, with his sole success coming against future Arsenal teammate Aaron Ramsdale when the latter was at Sheffield United.

Rice has since proven he can step up for the big occasions after joining Arenal, netting in the Champions League last-16 shootout win over Porto at the Emirates.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 3
  • Penalties scored during regular play: 1

Conor Gallagher

The best and worst of the Chelsea midfielder's penalty history are exempt from this list as they didn't come in competitive senior games.

Gallagher had a hundred per cent record from the five spot-kicks he took for his boyhood club while rising through the academy.

However, he was also responsible for a shocking panenka miss during a pre-season friendly defeat against Charlotte in July 2022.

The 24-year-old thankfully has been much more accomplished in competitive shootouts for Chelsea, scoring their second in a Carabao Cup win over Newcastle that saw his England teammate Trippier miss.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Penalties scored during regular play: 5/5 (0 at senior level)

Eberechi Eze

The 25-year-old has been one of the chief beneficiaries from Crystal Palace waving goodbye to former talisman Wilfried Zaha.

Following his departure, Eze has assumed more responsibility and among them are the two successful penalties he's taken this season.

The playmaker was a regular from the spot at Queens Park Rangers, scoring four and missing one during his time in the Championship.

He also has experience scoring them for England, having netted from 12 yards during the U21s Euros in a 2-1 win over Croatia in March 2021.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 8
  • Penalties scored during regular play: 7 (6 at senior level)

Jarrod Bowen

The West Ham talisman has improved his penalties in recent years following a mixed record while at Hull City.

Bowen missed two of the six spot-kicks he took in the Championship for the Tigers from September 2018 to August 2019.

Since his move to the Hammers, the 27-year-old has become much more accomplished with strikes in a Premier League win over Fulham and at the start of the club's Europa Conference League triumph.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains the only player to deny him from the spot since 2019.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Penalties taken during regular play: 9
  • Penalties scored during regular play: 6

Anthony Gordon

The Newcastle winger was a regular penalty taker in Everton's youth ranks, scoring five and missing two of his academy spot-kicks.

Gordon's role at the Toon has been more winning penalties for Alexander Isak to take rather than presiding over them himself.

However, he was allowed to try his luck during a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in February and duly made no mistake.

Gordon also got his first taste of scoring a winning penalty in a shootout following Newcastle's FA Cup win over Blackburn.

  • England penalties scored in shootouts: 0/0
  • Non-England penalties scored in shootouts: 1/1
  • Penalties scored during regular play: 6 (1 at senior level)
  • Penalties missed during regular play: 2 (0 at senior level)

Lewis Dunk

The Brighton defender is highly unlikely to find himself in a situation to take a penalty for England this summer.

But should the occasion arise, Dunk can hark back to converting against Millwall in the 2018/19 FA Cup sixth round.

The defender scored the winning kick in the shootout triumph over the Lions to help the Seagulls reach their first semi-final since 1983.

He also rattled home a thunderous effort in Brighton's semi-final shootout defeat to Man United at Wembley in 2023.
