Dusting is a household chore not many people want to do, especially in the summer when windows are open and it seems to get more dusty.

However, it can help certain health conditions such as hayfever, and asthma attacks as well as those allergic to pets.

According to NASA, certain houseplants can reduce dust levels in the home by up to 20 percent, making them ideal for busy households or ones with allergies.

Some houseplants capture dust particles from the air, leaving it up to the owner to clean the houseplant.

Cleaning dust-collecting houseplants regularly is incredibly important as it will help them to continue to grow.

1. English ivy

All ivy varieties are efficient in removing dust from the air, but it is the English ivy which is the most well-known and the most popular air-purifying indoor plant.

It is gorgeous to use as a trailing plant in the bathroom or on bookshelves to improve the air quality you breathe.

It not only looks great but also helps to remove moisture and humidity from the air, which are the main contributors to mould growth within the home, meaning it’s a great bathroom and bedroom plant.

2. Peace lily

Known for their white flowers known as spathes, the peace lily is on NASA’s list of 10 top air-cleaning plants.

This houseplant doesn’t only just add oxygen to the home but it helps to remove any toxins found too including benzene, formaldehyde, ethylene and ammonia.

3. Spider plants

Spider plants have foliage which resembles large blades of grass and are great at making a statement in the home.

This houseplant is highly effective in removing common air pollutants and studies have found the plant to eliminate around 90 percent of toxins in a room over the course of just two days.

Similar to English ivy, spider plants are good at air-purifying and removing humidity from the air.

This is great during the winter months when washing may be drying indoors, boosting the amount of moisture in the air.
