Lake Fenton — Marty Borski has been at this summer prep football thing for awhile.
The Lake Fenton varsity football coach has been doing it as a varsity and an assistant coach within the program for a long time, so he certainly has figured out a routine how the summer shapes up.
But this season is a bit different. Borski has decided to change up the summer sessions with his program this year.
“We’ve kind of flipped the scrip this year,” Borski said. “We are a little more conscious about the Xs and the Os and in the execution. Typically we work on our bodies in the summer and do a little less football stuff, but I think we found a better balance this year, because we’re going to have to change.”
Some of the reason for the change may have to do with the roster make up. The Blue Devils lost three first-team All-Metro League Stars Division players on offense and five more second-team players on defense due to graduation. Another two were honorable mention selections. Still, there is a little talent returning with six players that were on one of those lists that were underclassmen a year ago as well.
“We have a lot of new faces and graduated a lot of kids,” Borski said. “We have to learn what they are capable of, and they have to learn what we like to do, so we’ve kind of flipped the scrip a bit.
“If your philosophies are not molding to the talent that you have, you are doing a disservice to the talent you have. We’re not putting square pegs in round holes, so it’s exciting. I like the challenge. I like reinventing myself, challenging myself and the other coaches on staff. There will be quite a few changes this year.”
Positive attitudes
On June 28, the Lake Fenton football program hosted a seven-on-seven scrimmage with Fenton, Chelsea and Mount Morris. It was the last of Lake Fenton scrimmage the Blue Devils entered their dead week during Fourth of July week. Borski likes his team so far.
“The attitudes are fantastic,” Borski said. “We typically don’t have what we call a bad season — we have fun every day. But I love the fact that our kids are close. I love the fact that our kids are all about the business and understand, maybe for a younger group, when it’s time to have fun and maybe when its time to put all that crap aside and get down to business. They’ve been a delight to work with so far. I’m excited to see that.”

regular season schedule
The Blue Devils (6-4 overall) finished 3-2 in the Flint Metro League Stars Division with their losses coming against two teams that advanced far into the postseason — Goodrich (11-2) and Metro League champions Corunna (13-1).
Lake Fenton will have a similar non-league schedule compared to last year. The Blue Devils will travel to Pinckney on Aug. 29 for the season-opener and host Hillsdale for the home opener on Sept. 6. Lake Fenton beat both teams by a combined score of 93-6 a year ago. The Blue Devils’ week nine non-league game has changed. After facing New Lothrop in recent seasons, Lake Fenton will host Hamady on Oct 25. Their biggest rivalry game will be Sept. 13 when Goodrich hosts the Blue Devils.
